In the past, patients with important varicose dilations (varicose veins) had no other option than the classical surgery techniques for the varicose vein treatment, which, in addition to the hospitalization, pain, important blood loss and anaesthesia, also involved stripping i.e., the pulling out of the whole vein from under the skin. Only small varicose veins could be treated through sclerotherapy, i.e., the injection of a substance in the vein, which causes the destruction and collapse of the venous wall, the disappearance of the vein, so that, in the end, the patient could say they finally got rid of the varicose veins.

How are Varicose Veins Treated in LaurusMedical Clinics Without Surgery?

Today, due to the new UGFS (Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy), varicose veins may be treated without a surgical intervention, including the large veins, because this method supposes the precision, ultrasound-guided injection of the sclerosing agent directly into the affected vein.

How is Traditional Sclerotherapy Different from the UGFS Method?

The main difference resides in the fact that the physician uses ultrasound guidance upon the injection, thus obtaining a highly accurate image allowing them to (very precisely) inject the sclerosing agent into the affected vein, which guarantees a high success rate. The method also allows for the treatment of deep veins, which would have otherwise required surgery.

In general, the common symptoms of the varicose such as calf pain disappear immediately. UGFS leads to the collapse of the vein, which practically no longer is a varicose vein after the treatment. An 80% improvement of the appearance is generally noticeable within the first 2 weeks; however, it may take some time before the venous dilations completely disappear. In one third of the cases, one treatment session may be enough, whereas the other two thirds require 2-3 treatment sessions. In LaurusMedical Clinic, 2-3 therapeutic sessions are generally sufficient as an average, to permanently solve the venous problem.

Can UGFS Permanently Eliminate Varicose Veins?

Effectively treated veins will not relapse. UGFS allows for the final removal of the varicose veins, without surgery. However, a small percentage of the varicose veins may reappear, with a lower severity level.

How Many Treatment Sessions Are Required?

Strictly depending upon the size of the dilated veins, 1-3 treatment sessions are required per lower limb, in order to definitively solve the problem. The period between sessions is of approximately one week. Our goal, in LaurusMedical Clinics, is to treat existing varicose veins, help the patient prevent their reoccurrence/relapse, and provide all the assistance and support should new venous problems emerge.

How Should I Prepare for the Varicose Vein Treatment Session?

  • do not remove the hairs in the area to be treated on the varicose vein treatment start date;
  • do not use creams or lotions (the dressing will not adhere);
  • wear a pair of shorts for easy access to the vein and for decency purposes. You will then need a pair of trousers or a long skirt to cover the varicose vein dressings;
  • purchase compression stockings, also available at the clinic;
  • drink an important quantity of liquids on the varicose vein treatment day so as to avoid vein collapse;

Avoid walking and physical exercise prior to the injection, as this could empty the veins and make the injection more difficult. We recommend that you stand for a longer period of time before the treatment.
